Hemorrhoid Rectal Artery Embolization is a modern, minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure designed to treat symptomatic hemorrhoids by reducing their blood supply. It is performed in our outpatient office setting, and hospitalization is not required. This procedure is performed with local anesthesia (“twilight sleep”). During the procedure, our specialized physician trained in image guided interventions accesses the wrist or groin artery with a pinhole sized access and inserts a tiny micro catheter into the blood vessels supplying the hemorrhoids. Small particles and/or coils are then injected through the micro catheter to seal or embolize these blood vessels, thereby reducing blood flow to a more normal state causing the hemorrhoids to shrink and alleviate symptoms.
Hemorrhoids are composed of enlarged or hypertrophied artery and vein network called Corpus Cavernosum Recti (CCR). Embolization of the hemorrhoidal artery reduces blood flow in the CCR. This decreases pressure in the veins and improve symptoms. Hemorrhoidal artery embolization is a minimally invasive technique. After the procedure, patients can return home the same day and resume their life activities.
