What is Peripheral Artery Disease?

PAD is a condition caused by a buildup of plaque (fatty deposits) in the arteries that carry blood away from your heart to your legs and feet. This narrowing reduces blood flow, leading to pain, cramping, and even difficulty walking.

Symptoms of PAD

Pain

Leg pain, especially in the calves, thighs, or buttocks, that occurs with activity and improves with rest (claudication)

Cramping

Muscle cramping in the legs or feet

Numbness

Numbness or weakness in the legs or feet

Skin Changes

Changes in skin color or texture on the legs or feet

Sores

Slow-healing sores on the toes or feet

Temperature Changes

Coldness in the legs or feet

peripheral artery disease

Causes & Risk Factors

PAD is most commonly caused by atherosclerosis, the same process that leads to heart disease. Risk factors for PAD include:

Diagnosis of Peripheral Artery Disease

Ankle-brachial index (ABI)

A noninvasive test that compares blood pressure in the ankle to the blood pressure in the arm. An ABI of less than 0.9 indicates PAD in the lower extremities.

Doppler

Uses ultrasound to evaluate blood flow and blockages in the arteries and veins

Angiography

An X-ray that shows where plaque has built up in the arteries

Computed Tomography (CT) Angiography

An X-ray that looks at the arteries in the arms, legs, chest, head, neck, abdomen, and pelvis

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)

An MRI scan of the blood vessels that shows plaque buildup

Treatment Options for PAD

While lifestyle changes like smoking cessation, exercise, and managing other health conditions are important, interventional radiology offers minimally invasive treatments for PAD:

Balloon Angioplasty

A tiny balloon is inserted into the blocked artery and inflated to open it.

Stenting

A small mesh tube is placed in the artery to keep it open.

Atherectomy

Plaque is removed from the artery using a catheter-based device.
